Socialism: A Debate…

This is a commemorative pamphlet of the debate on Socialism held at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester on February 14th 1908 between Grayson and W. Joynson-Hicks.

In the aftermath of the debate Grayson was mocked for appearing significantly better dressed than his Tory opponent. Johnson-Hicks succeeded in being so broad and basic in his attacks on socialism that Grayson could never get to explaining any finer points, which he was again attacked for in the press. Robert Blatchford leapt to Grayson’s defence, charging that Joynson-Hicks had no interest in a factual debate on the subject but rather his mission was to obstruct Grayson from making any headway on the topic.
